What is EIS? Tennessee State Reporting Made Easy

The Education Information System (EIS) is the foundation of Tennessee’s K–12 education data system, comprising student demographic, program participation, grade level, enrollment, course enrollment and completion, discipline, and statewide assessment data.

In Tennessee, electronic data for District Records, sourced from Student Information Systems (SIS) Vendors, encompasses various details like student attendance, demographics, and teacher information. Access to this data is facilitated through online applications. The specifics regarding the stored data can be found in Public Chapter No. 905 House Bill No. 1549 Sections 4: 9-B for Student Data and 4:10 for Teacher Data.

Student data includes:

  • State and national assessment results, including information on untested public school students.
  • Course enrollment and completion, credits earned, and other transcript details.
  • Course grades and grade point average.
  • Date of birth, grade level, expected graduation date, or graduation cohort.
  • Information on degree, diploma, credential attainment, and school exit records, such as GED receipt and drop-out data.
  • Attendance and mobility records.
  • Data required to calculate the federal four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate, including sufficient exit and drop-out information.
  • Discipline reports limited to objective information necessary for the federal Title IV annual incident report.
  • Remediation information.
  • Special education data.
  • Demographic data and program participation information.

Teacher data includes:

  • Personal summative and evaluation scores.
  • Access to this information is restricted to the department, LEA administrators, local boards of education, or individuals with direct supervisory authority, who need it to carry out their assigned duties.
Failure to comply with state law by not meeting EIS reporting requirements may result in zero enrollment counts on official state and federal reports as well as on official, publicly-accessible web sites. In addition, zero enrollment counts will result in the loss of any funding based on official enrollment.
